Discussion for Census 1860

Census 1860

The major problem of the 1860 census is that family relationships of residents are not given. There is not sufficient detail about individuals to be sure in case of a name variation that individuals from other Censuses or documents are the same. The questions are the same as those of the 1850 census except for the addition of the value of personal property.

Questions on the census:

  1. Dwelling houses and number in order of visitation
  2. Families numbered in the order of visitation
  3. The name of every person whose usual place of abode on the 1st day of June, 1860, was in this family
Description:
  1. Age
  2. Sex
  3. Color - White, black, or mulatto
  4. Profession, occupation, or trade of each person, male or female, over 15 years of age
Value of real estate owned:
  1. Value of real estate
  2. Value of personal estate
  3. Place of birth, naming the state, territory, or country
  4. Married within the year
  5. Attended school within the year
  6. Persons over 20 years of age who can not read and write
  7. Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict
