Census 1870

Like the 1860 census, the 1870 census does not identify relationships between residents and do not have enough information about individuals to be sure of correct identification.

This census ask about foreign parentage, breaks the illiteracy question out into "cannot read" and "cannot write," and has a couple of questions aimed at the voting rights question. The married within the year check off, now asks for the month if married with the year, and an item is add for month of birth if born within the year.

Being as it is 1870 "Free Inhabitants" in the heading is replaced with "Inhabitants" and there are no slave schedules.

Questions:

  1. Dwelling houses and number in order of visitation.
  2. Families numbered in the order of visitation.
  3. The name of every person whose place of abode on the 1st day of June, 1870, was in this family.
Description:
  1. Age at last birthday. If under 1 year, give months in fractions, thus, 3/12.
  2. Sex - Males (M), females (F).
  3. Color - White (W), black (B), mulatto (M), Chinese (C), Indian (I).
  4. Profession, occupation, or trade of each person, male or female.
Value of real estate owned:
  1. Value of real estate.
  2. Value of personal estate.
  3. Place of birth, naming the state or territory of the United States, or the country, if of foreign birth.
Parentage:
  1. Father of foreign birth.
  2. Mother of foreign birth.
  3. If born within the year, state month (Jan., Feb., etc.).
  4. If married within the year, state month (Jan., Feb., etc.).
Education:
  1. Attended school within the year.
  2. Can not read.
  3. Can not write.
  4. Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, or idiotic.
Constitutional relations:
  1. Male citizens of United States of 21 years of age and upwards.
  2. Male citizens of United States of 21 years of age and upwards, whose right to vote is denied or abridged on other grounds than rebellion or other crime.
