Police Seeking Driver In Death Of Pedestrian
November 18, 1998
Steger police Tuesday were still trying to identity the driver of a vehicle involved in the death of a pedestrian at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 3200 block of Chicago Road.
Daniel Eighnor, 53, of Steger was hit as he stood in the middle of the street, according to Assistant Police Chief Greg Rambo. Eighnor died about six hours later, Rambo said.
A witness said the vehicle was a white or light-colored, early-1980s model Oldsmobile, said Rambo. Rambo said the witness told police the driver of the car paused after hitting Eighnor, then left the scene. The speed limit in the area is 35 m.p.h.
Eighnor, nicknamed “Dan the Can Man,” frequently pushed a shopping cart full of recyclables along Chicago Road. The shopping cart appeared to have been hit also, Rambo said.
The assistant police chief said it is unlikely the driver will face serious charges because Eighnor frequently walked into traffic and because that portion of Chicago Road was not well lit.
