Amelia Eighner

With the convenient bookends of the highly erroneous marriage register and her death register we can be sure that Amelia was called "Mary" during her married life and her husband’s name became "Edward Matson," whatever it might have been to start (probably Matteson).

Actually, her name is spelled "Igner" with some consistency among various registrars and transcribers. It is possible this is how she herself spelled it or she pronounced it as to suggest this spelling. She and her Matson family appear to be marginally literate judging by signatures of the children on documents.

All of this may not be right for son James seems to be about 5 years premature.

This seems sketchy because the actual place of death is Illinois and this is an Indiana record, possibly created to permit the burial in Indiana.

If the date and place are right, that is all that is right about this record. "Igner" is not a spelling of the bride's surname used anywhere else by a member of the family. The groom's surname should be "Matson." The groom's parents might be as he said they were, as he may simplified his name when he immigrated.

The date of this marriage as given is 5 years after the birth of the first child of Ed Matson and Mary Eighner. That is perfectly possible, of course. But it does raise questions. Is this our Amelia? Is "Mary Eighner" Amelia? Is this yet another error in an error-riddled document, or is it the wrong document altogether?

Note that "John" is the bride's father's given name here.
