calumus meretrix et gladio innocentis

Grace Manning

The couple was expelled from the Woodbridge Monthly Meeting (Quakers) for marrying "without the unity of Friends" December 1, 1740 which places their marriage sometime before that. Joseph moved to North Carolina a few years before his death.

Their children were:

Elizabeth Vail

Married William Davis.

Hannah Vail

Married Henry Johnson.

Joseph Vail

Joseph Vail is not clearly distinct from his brother usually called John, but sometimes Joseph John. They may be the same person, or if two, some facts about them may have been confused.

Joseph John Vail

Joseph John "John" Vail married Sarah Vance. He then married Amy Church, survivor of the Copus Massacre and widow of James Copus.

In marrying Amy Church Copus he becomes the step-father of Sarah Copus but also is her father-in-law when his son James Vail marries Sarah Copus. Genetically speaking, there is nothing even remotely incestuous about this, but it may be confusing, and the conclusion that James Vail married his step-sister may be and might have been culturally controversial.

For this reason I have entertained the possibility that Joseph Vail, his brother married the Copus widow. But I have found no evidence to support this hypothesis. If it were true, it might be the cause of the confusion that results in this person being called both Joseph and John.

Solomon Vail

Involved in the "Whiskey Insurrection". Left New Jersey and travelled to Frederick County, Virginia where he was a blacksmith. Later he enlisted in Morgan's Company as a Private. He was taken prisoner at Quebec and was transferred to the notorious prison-ship "New Jersey".

After either escaping or being released, he made his way to Morris County New Jersey and met up with his uncle Davis Vail. He entered General Gate's campaign. after which he left the service and removed to Western Pennsylvania. removed to Virginia. Entered the army and served through the Revolution; thereafter he married, left Virginia and went "with his brother John," (who however is not otherwise listed in Mr. Cory's paper), to Pennsylvania, where he lived till 1808, then removed to Ohio and there died.

Peter Vail

Moved to Canada at the time of the Revolution, married Sarah Ann ?, died in Nova Scotia.

Jonathan Vail

Jonathan's wife Isabella claimed a pension based on Jonathan's service with loyalist forces.

Grace Vail

Survived to 1861.
