Michael Alan "Mike" Eighner (1939-1990)

Michael Alan "Mike" Eighner, 51, of Rankin died at 6:30 a.m., July 15, 1990, in Rossville from massive internal head injuries at the scene of car-train accident. He was making early morning newspaper deliveries, a job he had held for 25 years, when his car struck a freight train at the Henderson Street crossing in Rossville. Eighner was driving his car east on Henderson Street when it entered the path of a southbound CSX freight train at the railroad crossing. Although the crossing is marked, there were no flashing lights or gates in use.

His funeral was at 1 p.m., July 18, at the Grace Lutheran Church, Rankin, the Rev. Bruce Heck officiating. Burial was at Rankin Union Cemetery. He was born Jan. 18, 1939, in Watseka, the son of Clarence J. and Marie Grafelman Eighner. He married Bonnie Seidel Sept 9, 1956, in Rankin. She survives. Also surviving are his mother, Rankin; two sons, Michael John, Gastonia, N.C., and Mark, Rankin; three daughters, Sherri Cox, Debbie Symmonds, and Lisa Eighner, all of Rankin; four grandchildren; and three brothers, Jack and Dick, both of Rankin, and Ted, Miami, Fla. His father preceded him in death. He was a barber In Rankin and Rantoul and was operating the Hair Force Barber Shop in Rantoul. He has held government contracts for shops at Fort Sheridan, Great Lakes and in Glenview. He had recently operated Dairy Queens at Milford and Paxton for 6 years. Mr. Eighner was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Rankin, and was currently serving on the church council. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Rankin Lions Club. A farmland owner in Iroquois County, he was a member of the Vermilion County Board from 1969 to 1974, supervisor of Butler Township from 1969 to 1981; and was past president of Vermilion County Supervisors Association. He has served as the News-Gazette bundle carrier for 25 years' and was on his paper route at the time of the accident
